Aston Martin, Aston Hill
The History...
In 2006 i met some German gentleman
driving an Aston martin around the UK in search of the Aston martin
history as to write a book and article. I stumbled across the
article recently by accident and
translated it (poorly) into English. The article includes reference
to me hence why I posted it!

"How
the Martin came to the Aston, by Roland Löwisch"
Meticulous search for clues after 92 years: In a modern V8 Vantage,
we searched after the roots of Aston Martin. And at an insignificant
hill in the English Herefordshire, we learned...
On the traces of Aston Martin, the street is rather narrow. Old and
often mended. Typically English just. "Slow" stands in thick white
characters occasionally on the street – and „40". Those are 60
kilometers per hour – much for this tangled piece botch. And yet
Aston Martin race here again and again up and down, down and up –
much faster than with 40 miles. "Recently was here a V8 Vantage with
Danish mark", tells resident Scott Camber, "that are the entire day
here rumgedüst. The passenger had a board with two stop clocks on
the lap... "
What is at this stretch merely at it, middle in the insignificant
hills of the county Herefordshire, about 60 miles northwesternly of
London city center? We are with a red V8 Vantage (385 HP, nearly
105,000 Euro) on the traces of the sign Aston Martin. First station:
the village Aston Clinton. Of here, one should echoed arrive at a
hill by the name of Aston. That was between 1904 and 1925 real
"motor country", a part of lord Rothschilds property.
Here knatterten 80 years ago the cars of the early days in "mountain
race" around the bet highly – among other things a racer by the name
of Lionel Martin. For the first time on the 4 April 1914, in a
getunten Singer. That it combined the name of the hill with its, and
therewith a brand name created. Aston Martin! What kind of name for
the first product of the firm Bamford and Martin Limited that has
sold since the 15 January 1913 in the Londoner west Singer- cars.
Origin of a proud legend:
Martin, the reckless Eton-student, and Robert Bamford, that gifted
engineer, let its first "Aston Martin" on the 16 March 1915 to –
with modified 1,4-Liter Coventry-Simplex-motor. The public got a
quite shapeless, small car to face and named it henceforth "Coal
Scuttle" – "coal box". It was tormented and maltreated as a test
object, echoed naturally also at the Aston. What kind of Vantage
today a laughable practice represents, must have been at the
beginning of the measure mechanization a challenge.
Today large groups stand stood usually behind small signs (in Aston
Martin is it since 1987 Ford), at that time the survival of a sign
permanently in the stars. As well as in Aston Martin. That the firm
survived, is to be owed mainly the enthusiasm heavy empire patron.
The young firm had to overcome for the first crisis already after a
couple of years when Bamford got out – because it wanted to have
nothing to do with series productions. For that a certain count
Louis Zborowski with its fortune got into. It came 1925 then yet to
the bankruptcy – too little Verkäufe, too high prices...
1926 received lord Charnwood, John Benson, Domenico Bertelli and
William Renwick the firm and named it "Aston Martin motor". New
factory? Denkste – the cars were constructed in a leased barn in
Feltham. Arthur Sutherland bought became 1932 the firm, its son
Gordon manager. The year production later consisted three years of
just once 66 cars. In February 1947 Brown-era (see side 74) began
the Davids when the industrial bought for 20,000 pounds Aston Martin
(later also yet Lagonda) and retained until 1972.
Home to Aston Martin Lagonda:
Brown acquired 1954 a factory in Newport Pagnell at the Tickford
streets. There became beginning of the 19th century under Salmon &
Sons carriages constructed, in the '20er's MGB-car-body together
screw. From that Tickford motor Bodies that made Lagondas emerged.
We drive this factory with our red V8 on, for it exists yet today as
an "outside place Vanquish".
Almost all old buildings stand yet, are used for the administration
when warehouse or for the production. The historic place grew the
city Newport Pagnell (certainly not entirely unselfish) so at the
heart that on the plotted entrance sign exceptionally "home to Aston
Martin Lagonda" may stand – for what extra the community statute
changed became.
Here have emerged since 2001 round 300 to 350 Vanquish per year –
exclusively in handwork. That begins in the forming of aluminum
(alone the stern lid of the 528 HP of strong Vanquish S claims ten
hours), goes further in the varnishing and ends first in the wheel
bolt dressed by hand. In the end the standard CD-unit standesgemäß
becomes tied" tested one to hand "best of James -CD. While a Ford
Fiesta emerges in approximately 18 hours, necessarily a Vanquish
would say and would write 385 fabrication hours – what also the unit
price of 255,000 Euro declared. Nevertheless the delivery time
period amounts to presently nine to twelve months
Full restorations and special working:
How long the 350 workers can cause to be sure yet in Newport Pagnell,
is questionable. Rain water races marode ruinses through that – at
present is tested whether a modernization is worthwhile generally.
Can be that in approximately 18 months at this historic place end
is. Opposite, on the other side of the street traded that cause
service – the start point for gecrashte, to be overtaken or to
tunende Aston Martin from (DB4 model 1958).
More yet more interesting is a small and insignificant shed at the
edge of the parking lot: Here the full restorations and special
working take place. Is finished floats straight a picture beautiful
DB6 Mk II, on the elevated stage an open orangefarbener DB4,
vis-à-vis stands a gutted Aston Martin Ogle of 1971. The Bertone-design
on basis of the DBS was made only three times – the owner lets
rebuild it just of to the right control on to the left control.
Beside it a V8 Lagonda. The once ultra-modern digital instruments
are exchanged just now for analogous – the owner would like to hear
no permanent ice warnings in the summer more.
In a corner a shed finding dusty totally out of Norfolk: A red DB4,
model 1961, chassis no. DB4/641/R. Not in running order, 30 years
standing time. Recently of a bidder in Bonhams buys – called were
converted 30,000 Euro, cost has he 120,000 Euro. On the restoration,
the happy new owner must wait because of overfilling to be sure two
years. That lasts then once again a year and will cost about 290,000
Euro.
The uncertain future:
Only a car in Aston Martin cause service belonged – a DB2/4 arisen
just now. then the sign begins to buy just just first, even old
cars. Because it schlechtging the firm permanently, all copies had
to be sold always – inclusive of the prototype, Showcars and rare
custom-made items.
The first redemption was recently the DB6 of Ex-Beatle Paul
McCartney. In the vehicle, yet the alleged original-tape recorder,
on which the musician received the first tact of "Hey Jew" during
the trip, is.
By the way: More than 75 percent of all ever constructed Aston
Martin (at present about 27,000 pieces) go yet today, especially
maintained of the Aston Martin Owners club (Amoc). There the chance
is quite largely that yet some echoed quickly once past show at the
Aston-Martin-commemorative
stone high, 1997 erected about a meter at the Aston. It to is
surveyed however easily: On the street after St. Leonards about a
mile behind the gulf place, left side, to the left of the private
parking lot in the high grass, yet before the "summit". He who does
not find it, can ask Scott Camber if it is there. Or us – we flare
up here certainly another couple of time and down.
Regards
Scott
