Aston Hill
Bombhole Challenge
Sunday 10th
August
Those of you who have
ridden at Aston hill for more than a couple of years will be all too
familiar with the stupendously fun race event known as the “Bombhole
Challenge”. Anyone who rode in this annual event (established by
“hill” legend Ian Warby), will know that this simple race often
heralded the onset of winter rain resulting in a track that had the
consistency of soup. However this wet and muddy landscape was always
populated by hoards of drenched riders cheering the competition
through mud encrusted smiles.
So what is the point of all this misty eyed reminiscing you ask...
well, I was merely wetting your appetites prior to announcing that the
Bombhole Challenge is coming back and (cover your ears Mr Warby!), it
is going to be dry. That’s right folks the Bombhole Challenge is being
moved to the summer, so along with a day of short-track racing Aston
hill can also boast a BBQ, prizes, sunshine and most importantly a bit
of fun.
For the uninitiated amongst you, the race consists of two laps (one
short, one even shorter), around the Bombholes. Each rider takes it in
turn to race the clock and if you fancy another go then a pound or two
will see you on the start line again. The event is suitable for all
ages, skill levels and rider types and is a great event to bring along
riding buddies who would never normally visit Aston Hill.
Following on from the timed laps is the highlight...relay racing. Two
teams of four riders line up, with each rider completing a lap against
his opposing rival before handing over to the next rider. This is real
elbow to elbow racing but at safe speeds. Tactical use of the “one
short lap” can decide who wins and who looses. Whilst some teams are
set up in advance, many riders (once strangers), rally together to
form event winning teams.
The date for all this is Sunday 10th August
News from Aston Hill HQ is that just in case all you experienced
“Bombholers” were wondering, yes there will be a prize for best crash
- typically (as in past years), determined by the loudest cheer!!!
