LEMMING
TRAIL EVENT
Brought to you by Trail
Break
Welcome to the world of
class long distance endurance challenges, for 2006 Trail Break, which we
all know organise such fantastic events such as the Navigator events and
Evans Bike Shop rides, are organising two class long distance enduro
challenges called the Lemming Trail Series...
What is a Lemming trail event you ask?
LEMMING TRAILS are the original UK mountain bike endurance
challenges. The first one ran in 1996 and the two day Lemming format is
still unique and gives the events a much more epic feel than one day
rides. The Lemming format offers so much more
than a single day enduro event. You get a full weekend of top class riding
with an overnight stop that has camping and hostel accommodation right on
the trail. You get a big evening meal and a Sunday morning cooked
breakfast all in with the price of the event, you can book a packed lunch
for the second days riding. All you need to pack is a bit of lunch for the
first days ride. There are extra food and drink
supplies available at the support stations on route.
The two events for 2006 are two day
fully supported mountain bike endurance weekends, one being on the South
Downs Way and the other being on The RIDGEWAY - you can obviously guess which
one were interested in...
The 1-2nd July 2006 sees
the 80mile/5000ft climbing endurance event come to the Ridgeway - from
Princes Risborough to Avebury.
The event is based
on 2 days riding on the following format
- Day 1, 50miles/3000ft climbing
- Day 2, 30miles/2000ft climbing
The two day event costs
between £65 and £80 depending on what package you sign up for. Youth
Hostel Accommodation is available in an overall price of £80, or camping
included at a price of £70 or a 'book you own bed' package is available at
£65. A return bus journey is an extra £20, and a packed lunch is £4 per
day.
The event includes full back up, trail support and maintenance assistance,
accommodation arrangements, ride timing, catering (evening meals, Sunday
morning breakfast, energy drinks) and transportation including luggage
transportation (of camping kit to and fro sites whilst your riding) and of
an option return journey back to the start via coach.
The Ridgeway is
an ideal introduction to long distance trails. The route offers enough
climbs and descents to challenge and entertain you, interspersed with
sections of high ridge cruising that offer spectacular views of the
surrounding countryside. The Ridgeway is
Europe’s oldest continuously used trail and there are a wealth of ancient
monuments and landmarks along its length. The ride finishes at the village
of Avebury, with it’s spectacular standing stones (believed to be even
older than Stonehenge).
Day one of thechallenge departs from Princes
Risborough close to the foot of the Chiltern
Hills. Climb out of the town and then enjoy several surprisingly quick
descents in the opening miles before joining the classic Ridgeway track
running along the foot of Chilterns. The route winds upwards before
offering a superb wooded descent down to the River Thames in time for a
lunch break.
The Bull, Goring is a welcome and sociable
place for lunch, and there is time to relax with a drink and a bite to eat
before taking on the big climb back up to the ridge. Once you reach the
higher ground you'll be treated to a series of breath taking views of the
Oxfordshire countryside all the way to the overnight stop close to Wantage,
50 miles into your route. the Ridgeway Youth Hostel is one of the best
hostels in the country. Constructed from five disused barns around a
central courtyard and positioned right up on the ridge, it is a fantastic
spot to relax and enjoy a barbeque dinner at the end of the first day.
Day two takes you to the Wiltshire section
of the Ridgeway, where the rolling downs throw in a few more ups and downs
than day one. You only have 30 miles to do though, so you can afford to
take time and enjoy the scenery. The ride finishes with long,
smile-inducing descent and cruise along Avebury's spectacular avenue of
stones.
All in all, the
Ridgeway Lemming is a great weekend of summer riding.
