Shimano XTR Wheelset (Centre Lock M-975)

Shimano’s new XTR wheelset is 187g lighter than the old version that they are replacing. The wheelset now only weighs a super light 1525g!!

This featherweight result is achieved by using new scandium rim technology as well as a new spoke-lacing pattern.

There are other wheelsets out there that are lighter than the XTRs (only just), these are the Mavic Crossmax SLRs weighing 1420g and the DT Swiss XRs weighing 1480g. However Shimano’s wheelset only costs £500 which is considerable cheaper than its rival competition with only a small difference in weight.

As with most Shimano hubs now they have gone to this centre lock disc rotor fitting which prevents the use of many disc brakes - your really limited to shimano discs only unless you run shimano centre lock rotors with a different make of brake. The centre lock system certainly works well and gives easy fitting and maintenance.

The hubs themselves are finished in a superb matt grey, and the bearings are all sealed, so are safe from the UK's best offering of mud. Parts are easily available and servicing can easily be done by any Shimano Service Centre store.

The rims are disc only and are made of lightweight scandium aluminium, finished in a superb grey shot peen finish.

I have been using my XTR wheels for just over a month now and I have had no problems at all. Despite the lightweight nature and low spoke count design these are very stiff and are able to cope with all of the technical tracks I have found so far without noticing any noticeable flexing.

If you are looking to lighten up your bike and make it move faster under acceleration then a wheel upgrade is a great idea and the best way to do it.

If you’re on a budget than look at cheaper off the shelf wheelsets or even a custom wheel build, but if you can afford to splash out and want the best money can buy then I recommend the 2007 XTR Wheelset, as they are right up there with the best!!!
