SPLITTING A CHAIN:
To split a chain by splitting a link requires a special chain tool. Many multi
tools feature chain tools, or they can be purchased separately. Position the
chain in the furthest guide from the rivet punch, making sure the chain sits
nicely in the tool. Screw in the rivet punch carefully, ensuring it touches the
centre of a chain rivet squarely side-on, not at an angle. Firmly screw in the
punch to push the rivet out the other side of the chain. Don’t push the link pin
completely through, leave a little bit left in the outer plate of the chain
which will make it easier to rejoin the chain later. If you are going to use a
new pin don’t worry.
JOINING A CHAIN:
To rejoin the chain, bring the two ends of
the chain together. Using the chain tool, reposition the chain again in the
furthest guide from the rivet punch, this time with the exposed rivet facing the
punch. Slowly and carefully, screw in the punch, pushing the rivet back into the
chain. Make sure that the rivet is being pushed in squarely and not at an angle.
Continue to drive the rivet into the chain link until the rivet is protruding by
equal amounts on either side of the chain.
CLEANING:
Clean your chain using ‘Muc-Off’ or another specific chain degreaser in a chain
bath. The ‘Muc-off’ bike cleaning set comes with a parts washing tub and all the
correct brushes and cleaning fluids (£29.99). Remove your chain from your bike
for cleaning. Refit the chain to your bike after you have cleaned all the other
transmission components. Lubricate the chain by applying a quality bicycle chain
oil, chain lube or WD40. Bicycle chain oils/lubes are available in both wet and
dry formulas. The dry versions dry to a waxy finish making it more resistant
against grit and dust in dry dusty summer conditions. Wet versions stay wet and
sticky making it repellent to washing away in the wet, and is suited to wet and
muddy conditions. Apply the oil lube only to the inner links
